I’ve always liked old pocket watches, in fact any time piece I always appreciate, it’s really to do with the craftsmanship, the feel of quality and looks, plus durability.
My favourite is the Waltham, see below I’ve posted another Waltham this time it’s a 1908 full hunter cased model with 17 jewels and a 9ct filled case and a 625 grade nickel movement. She’s in reasonable condition with just one or two areas the gold has worn through to the brass plate, it works beautifully.
If you want to check the serial numbers for all Waltham then a good site is the NAWCC site, full of interesting factual information.

Thought you would like a few details about the Waltham Watch Company, it’s still in existance a operates out of Switzerland.
Walthams started as the Warren Mfg Co. started by Edward Howard, David Davis and Aaron Dennison in 1851. A factory was built in Massachusetts in 1953, during this time the company name changed many times. Around 1959 it seems the name was settled on The American Waltham Watch Company, and the name subsequently was given to the wwatches of Waltham. Many millions of watches was produced by Walthams and they were credited with being the first mass-producer of watches in America.
Collectors look out for early Waltham pocket watches especially the ones with the original founders names or ‘Appleton Tracey and Co.’ used in the 1850s.

These unusual but very collectible silver and gold tooth stick pins will be listed on eBay today, if you would like to bid on then find them on the right hand column and click the description.

Very unusual and individually unique tie pins or lapel pins or even stick pins, two have a belt buckle design made from silver one with silver tips. The other silver one has a decorated silver tooth strap, they measure approx. 6.6cm long and 4cm from tooth tips. The final pin is tested for 9ct gold, has tips on the tooth, and a line decorated strap.

Fine Art Auctions Are A Waste Of Time, so slow, so boring, so damned expensive, they make money on the front end, the back end and the rear end, that’s were it comes out of.
Have you ever made a comparison between the prices paid through a Fine Arts auction, not the common household weekly or fortnightly auction, but the auction that is blasted all over the internet, has internet bidders and phone bidders? and attracts collectors and main dealer buyers who pay top dollar for lots. Well I have and you will be amazed at how much less you can buy a lot of Fine art auction items by sourcing and buying through eBay. If you are a Fine arts buyer you must factor in a number of additional costs, one is the commission and VAT which combined varies from 15% to 18% depending on the auction you go to, the more upmarket auctions tend to charge even more as they have higher overheads, and in some well known auctions have to pay shareholders. You will also have to allow for your time and travel expenses going to auctions and fringe costs like food, drinks etc.plus how much does your time cost to be stood around a auction room  for a good part of the day? The major point is that you do not have to pay these extra costs when buying from eBay, the only cost sometimes is the postage and packaging, but that usually costs nowhere near the amount of petrol or other traveling expenses you incur going to an auction.  At this point you think I’m waffling so here’s a few examples from genuine auctions, in fairness I’m not going to name auctions as it’s unfair to pick a few local auctions when this is a countrywide. I’ve found the following:   A Hardy’s of Alnwick 1930′s leather cased fly fisherman’s wallet, gilt inscription 90/120 Can be bought on eBay about £75.00  A boxed Hardy Viscount 140 reel with instructions, probably 1950′s 90/120 Buy on eBay at £40 -£45.00  A late 19thC Hardy’s of Alnwick landing net in mahogany and brass 200/250 This is a good one, easily buy on eBay for no more than £60.00  A silver oblong milk jug and sugar basin with gilt interiors, London 1904, 18oz 150/175 You would get some great examples on eBay for less than £60.00  A fine George III mahogany tea caddy with Cavetto top and secret drawer, brass drop handle and escutcheon plate, two keys, ogee bracket feet £300/400 If you have to pay more than £150.00 for this on eBay I’d be very surprised.  A Beswick fireside advertising model of the Dulux sheepdog, height 12″ (30.5cm) 175/225 For undamaged in great condition examples on ebay you cab buy for around £100.00 or less.  I can find a lot more examples, and so can anyone who is willing to hunt around a bit, look at the on-line catalogue through the on-line bidding antique companies, they give you the estimated values, then see if you can get at a lower price on eBay, you will be surprised at the results. Remember it’s not just the end value you buy at the fine antique auctions, the final price is when you add in all the overheads, this to me is what is killing of off-line joint to on-line fine antique auctions.  I’m going to look into this area a lot more closely, so will update this post sometime, in the meantime find some articles you are considering buying at a fine antique auction, estimate the final value then add the overheads, and see if you can find cheaper on eBay by searching in the eBay search box top right hand column – good luck.

Waltham giant gold pocket watch.

This Giant Waltham Elgin cased pocket watch has been sold, see below for similar waltham pocket watches on offer.
I’m offering for sale this superb Waltham Giant, Elgin made case from 10k gold filled, as it has the giant stamp on the inside case. The watch is 15 jewel and is graded giant it looks as though they only made a 1000 of these watches the serial numbers ran from 10398001 to 19399000 and this one is 19398446, so they are pretty scarce.
