I’m offering before I list on eBay a superb set of four antique solid silver table spoons or serving spoons. They weigh in total 266 grams and are hallmarked London 1828 and made by Jonathan Haynes.

The silver table spoons are in excellent condition with no repairs or dents, they do have a monogram on the terminals, the marks are clear and crisp, they measure a fraction under 9″.

The Silver Spoon an Excellent Investment.

The early spoon if it is in fine condition, of a good age and very importantly with clear hallmarks, is an attractive acquisition and trully and excellent investment. To be in A1 condition is a must as the buyer must put themselves in the position of a future purchaser, who probably again will be buying to add to collection as an investment. Solid silver spoons are presently very collectable, see below listings on eBay.

Collectors need to resist the temptation of indiscriminate purchase simply because the price seems right. they shoulod bear in mind that the antiques trade is a very organised and erudite offshoot of the fine arts and members pride themselves on their understanding of current trends.
Their are a large number of shapes and designs of spoons spanning a considerable perion, please see below of the main ones, this is not an exhaustive list but it gives a reference point. The history of the spoon as a table accessory goes back a long time, the origin of the word ‘spoon’ is reputed to go back to the Anglo Saxons who had a word sounding similar to descibe a chip of wood pressed into service as a ladle.

Really nice pair of Silver Sugar Tongs dated 1895, they have a nicely decorated style, with clear hallmarks. The maker is JR who I believe are John Round & Son 1878-1906, Tudor Works, Tudor Street, Sheffield.

The silver sugar tongs weigh 38g and measure 4″, they are in superb condition with no repairs.

 

This quality silver fork and silver spoon christening set has been sold, but see below for more superb examples offered.

This silver fork and spoon set I believe was given as a Christening gift, the initials on each seems to be ASS, so certainly for the same person.
The silver fork was assayed in London 1920 made by Wakely and Wheeler it measures 14.5cm, the silver spoon was assayed in Sheffield dated 1919 and made by Charles William Fletcher, the combined weight is 49 grams.

I believe this silver spoon and fork is a christening set, it’s essayed Sheffield dated 1910 and made by George Howson. The silver spoon fork set comes in a good box with a nice finished interior, the spoon measures 14.3cm and the silver fork 15cm, the combined weight 42g.

The design is clean and simple, both silver spoon and silver fork items have initials, I think they are FPW or PFW.

These silver teaspoons Fiddle design have been sold but see below for more quality silver teaspoons on offer.

Five super quality silver teaspoons with a simple fiddle design, they measure 14cm and each weigh 24g. The hallmarks show assayed in Sheffield 1837 just at the end of the beginning of the Victorian period.

The makers mark on these silver teaspoons shows PL that stands for that period is Patrick Leonard of Salford. all five silver teaspoons are in excellent condition and have cleaned up beautifully.
