Yard-O-Led Silver Pencil hallmarked 1953 Makers JM & Co.

I’m offering for sale a solid silver hallmarked London 1953 Yard-O-Led pencil, the makers mark is JM & Co, also has a lion passant on the clip and the top half of the pencil. Yard-O-Led pencils from this period are becoming harder to find, this one is in good condition, with some slight surface wear and one or two minor bumps. The pencil comes loaded with lead, but cannot say if it has the full just under a yard.
The pencil measures just about five inches in length and weighs 26gms.

I’m asking around £40 for this pencil.

The Parker 51 Fountain Pen

28 November 2009
Comments Off

The Parker 51 is probably one of the most famous and recognisable fountain pens ever produced, in fact at one stage
the Parker 51 was declared as the Worlds most wanted pen.
The “51″ name was given to the pen in 1939 to cellebrate the company’s 51 years, the “51″ was also given to the ink,
another reason for a number name was that it circumvented the problem of translating a name into other languages.

After many tweeks the Parker 51 continued being made till 1972, the biggest change being the improved Aeromatic filling system

The parker 51 had to have it’s own special ink that reduced alkalinity, and over time a selection of bright
colours was added to the range, the ink’s name eventually was called Superchrome. As with the old Parker 51
in the ink came with a warning that it should only be used in a Parker.

The Parker 51 was well advanced at the time, its hooded, tubular nib and multi-finned collector, all
made to work with the pen’s own special ink, allowing the nib to stay wet and produce an even line with either the
ultra-fast drying ink or more traditional inks.
For advertising purposes the Parker 51 was compared to a fighter plane the P-51 Mustang used during the second World war.

The Parker 51 is one of the most collected pens, and top condition examples are highly sought after by collectors.
To find some really good examples of the Parker 51 take a look at the list below from eBay, you must expect to pay a premium
for the higher quality pens. The condition is of importance, check the originality of all the components making up the pen if the pictures are not clear request some better ones.

Mabie Todd Swan Eye Dropper Fountain Pen

Mabie Todd was an Anglo-American Company dating 1860s – 1958, producing some superb and very expensive pens that are today highly collectable.
The main pens were usually eye-dropper models, lever fillers or simple twist fillers, in which the knob at the end of the barrel connects directly with a paddle inside the barrel which in turn depresses the sack.
Mabie Todd Swan pens were made from silver, and gold filled and elegantly decorated.
Good examples well worth buying for pleasure and investment.

Conklin Fountain Pen 1898 – 1940s

13 October 2009
Comments Off

Conklin was a US Company dating 1898 – 1940s. The nib sizes ranged from 2 to 8, they produced the first practical self – filling mechanism in the US. This was a crescent shaped pressure bar protruding from the barrel held in position by a locking ring. It was unfortunately for Conklin surpassed by Sheaffer’s innovation in the early 1910s of the lever filler, which did not need the protruding crescent.
Conklin played with the green wood-grain hard rubber about the 1930s, but in reality it was overtaken by Sheaffer and Parker in development of mechanisms and material usage, even by the 1920s it had become a small regional company.

Collecting Fountain Pens

10 October 2009
Comments Off

When you come across a fountain pen for sale, your first consideration should be to check that all the parts are present this includes the cap rings and end pieces.
Check the wear of the metallic areas, is the gold plating still covering the base metal? has the silver still retaining the inscriptions and decorations.
Look for non original parts especially the nib, the inscription on the nib should match that on the barrel. The more expensive pens have nibs made from 14 carat gold, but this can be fixed to any pen so still go by the description and reference this to a specialist fountain pen catalogued book.
One of the best places to buy fountain pens is Ebay, always check the feedback and the veracity of the seller, here are some excellent examples:

These silver pencils are all in excellent working order, they date from the 1940′s and have today become very collectable, especially the Yard O Led. The J.M. & Co. are very similiar to the Yard O Led and it’s possible the two companies worked together to produce these silver pencils.

J.M. & Co. Hexagonal silver pencil hallmarked assayed in London 1947, measures 12.3cms and weighs 25 grams. It’s in nice clean condition with slight surface wear, it’s hallmarked top, middle and point.
